I'm looking at getting mountain trooper load out sorted as I'd like to have an Axis impression for those times when either US aren't allowed or I feel a little kinky. I've done a bit of research, (mostly via Wikki), and settled on the 2nd Gebirgsjager Division. I've found a few pictures of them in Parkas etc, but was wondering if anyone did could confirm what they wore under the cold weather stuff? I'm assuming it's standard field grey uniform?

Also if anyone's done a Gebirgsjager impression any pointers on insignia etc are welcome.

Cheers in advance. :)

Off the top of my head, the difference between GJ's and "regular" Axis forces:

Special Gebirg's trousers
Cleated mountain boots
Bergemutze (similar to the peaked cap, but a shortened bill)
Windproof smock

Of these, the items that are commonly available are the bergemutze and the windproof smock. It would be the standard tunic worn underneath the smock.

Insignia wise, Edelweiss (spl?) on the cap is one, cant remember any others.

HTH.

When we were a Kingdom it was run by a King
When we were an Empire it was run by an Empress
Now we're a country we're run by a..........

WAF forum, though you need to register to see the piccies, useful for alsorts of information about uniforms/insignia etc more from a collectors aspect but as said oodles of info ;)

http://forum.axishistory.com

again useful for searching

http://www.panzergrenadier.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=42 few members of this forum are members of here, not sure if any of the Gebirgsjager members are here (but you never know) they've not long since got their own section but theres lots of piccies and info and am sure if you had a question needing an answer they would be happy to help

Insignia, I'll take a stab in the dark that Militaria.net has it ;) Anthony has his own section in the forum (whether he's realised is a different matter  )

Think Richardshultz has a GJ loadout ? am sure someone did one ;)

Neil Blume is the 'grumpy gebirgsjager' lol

I'll dig out some pics from some reference books so you can see the insignia etc that can be worn.

Waffenfarbe will be HELLGRUN (Light Green)

in addition to Kermit's comment regarding edelweiss insignia on the bergmutze, you'll need edelweiss patch for right arm, if u can ski - a ski-jager arm badge and if feeling very special get a coveted Bergfuhrer(Mountain guide) breast badge in enameled metal.

Outerwear wise you can go for either a sage green windjacke(windjacket) or 3 pocketed windblusen(anorak)

If I dig out my scanner tomorrow I'll do the pics.

I know that Spearhead does both types of jacket - but never seen them in the flesh so cant comment on quality or cut.

Oh one last thing Mountain troops wore putee's instead of the usual lowboot gaitors

Cheers Del, much appreciated. Hopefully someone will ask about something I'm able to help with someday so I can repay the assistance. Although as my knowledge is limited to drinking and playing hockey that's highly unlikely...

I've found most of the kit, but am having problems sourcing the specialist trousers and boots. Am going to email a couple of places and see if I can track them down.

Also what's the quality difference between uniforms from places like Epic Militaria and Spearhead? Are the higher prices from Epic worth paying?

Cheers

Gerbirgs are a good impression to put together because a lot of the guys came from mountaineering backgrounds before the war. Therefore youd often see them wearing non issue kit. A jumper they'd worn on a prvious climb, boots thier family might have sent out to them, etc. try and find yourself a roll neck sweater or better still get an elderly relative to knit one for you :D Wear that under your tunic like the guys originally would have done.

I have spent many hours re-searching the correct colour. Yes its called `light green` but in reality its more a mid-green. Many people make the mistake and buy light green s/boards etc , these are actually for PZG and are referred to as `grass green` If you want the correct colour waffensfarbe s/boards, crusher caps etc i sell them ( of course) The pics on my websitre http://www.militaria-net.co.uk
are out of date if you want new pics of correct colour PM me.

cheers
Anthony

PS as with most german kit colour did vary but technicaly the correct colour is a medium green shade.

Yes it would be too light, i have seen some picture of GEB`s insignia which is light almost like the PZG but these would be the execption, in most cases its medium green colour.
