Cheers guys. Don't have an EK, so I settled on the IA in the centre, with the wound badge lower and to the left (as you look at it).

Thats exactly as I have mine except I have a Panzer Assault badge in Bronze instead of the IA as my impression is PanzerGrenadier (dismounted. "Hey Hans, where did you park the 251?" )

Should it not be Infantry assault badge in bronze for dismounted panzergrenadier? :)

When I say dismounted, I mean as in just jumped out the halftrack to engage the enemy!

A permanently dismonted pzgrdr wouldn't really be a pnzgrdr would he !?

No i know what poacher means

the IA badge in silver is for leg inf and the bronze one for those in PZGR formations isnt it.

The 'panzer' assault badge is for AFV crewmen i thought?

Im not sure but i thought that was it, whereas with most awards the metal type is for grade with the IA badge its just the type of formation.

Well, the chap at GW was very helpful today, even to the extent of fetching me paint and a brush and getting me a seat. Two minutes work and it looks much better, really pleased with the result. :D

Hmm, this is an interesting one. I think you are correct but I also believe it was awarded to soldiers who went into battle in AFV's like halftracks, inc PzGr; but I could be wrong.

This from the web:
The Wehrmacht Panzer Assault badge was introduced on December 20, 1939, in order to recognize the achievements of Panzer personnel who took part in armored assaults. It was designed by Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin, and was instituted by order of Generaloberst von Brauchitsh. On June 6th 1940, a separate class of the badge in Bronze was added, in order to recognize the crews of armored vehicles other than tanks (half tracks, assault guns, etc). To have taken part in three armoured assaults on three different days, to have wounded in the course of an assault or to have earned a bravery decoration in the course of an assault. As mentioned above, the Silver class was presented to tank commanders, gunners or radio operators while the bronze class was presented to the Panzer-Grenadier regiments, tank assault crew, armored recon units, and medical personnel who went into battle in armored vehicles. The award was authorized through the Panzer Division commander.

Case in point, this guy appears to be a PzGr, he certainly doesnt look like AFV crew to me. but I guess its possible he could have been awarded it in a previous role?

Fair play seems bizzare to have two awards for the same thing though.

I quite agree Gadge. I wonder if there is a distiction made between PzGr who were equiped with 251's and those (the majority) who just had trucks? The latter would enter into combat on foot a-la infantry and would get the IAB in bronze. Those in 251's would ride into battle as part of an armoured assault and so would qualify for a PAB in bronze. Maybe??? :?

Some more research is called for I think.

BTW, and getting even more off topic (sorry Kav), did you all notice that among the obvious stubble, the soldat in that photo seems to have a definite defined and shaped Goatee beard!

Clarification from a reputatable source: http://www.deutschesoldaten.com/ :D

Infantry Assault Badge (Infanteriesturmabzeichen)
Instituted: 20 December 1939 (Silver version) and 1 June 1940 (Bronze version)
First Awarded: April 1940
Requirements: Participation in at least three seperate infantry assaults.
Restrictions: The silver version went to men in Infantry units, the bronze version to soldiers in Motorized Infantry units. Only one type of assault badge could be worn, regardless of the number of transfers to other arms.
Rarity: An extremely common award, probably awarded in the millions.

Worn on the left pocket, centred if no other badges were worn, or on the left side of the EK I (as viewed from the front) when that medal was worn. Only 1 assault badge could be worn at any one time, usually the first one awarded.

Armoured Assault Badge (Panzersturmabzeichen)
Instituted: 20 December 1939 (Silver version) and 1 June 1940 (Bronze version)
Requirements: Participation in at least three seperate armoured assaults, having been wounded in an assault, or having been decorated for bravery during an assault.
Restrictions: The silver version went to tank crews, the bronze version to crewmen of other armoured vehicles, such as self-propelled guns, panzergrenadier troops in halftracks, armoured medical personnel, etc. Only one type of assault badge could be worn, regardless of the number of transfers to other arms.
Rarity: A fairly common award, especially for tank crewmen.

Worn on the left pocket, centred if no other badges were worn, or on the left side of the EK I (as viewed from the front) when that medal was worn. Only 1 assault badge could be worn at any one time, usually the first one awarded.
