Those are for belt hooks. I don't think many of us bother with them to be honest. It's just something else to faff around with when you put your belt order on.
When we were a Kingdom it was run by a King
When we were an Empire it was run by an Empress

You only really need your belt hooks if your carrying all your kit. Takes some of the weight ot the Y straps and makes it easier to put your belt on initially. Also helps to keep it all a little higher so you can get to your tunic pockets.

Well, that said, I used my belt hooks at D-Day, and didn't need to use my y-straps at all.
