Ah caltrops!
Argh! Zer verdammt Britisher commandos strike again!
I've fired a bullet on every continent. Nearly hit someone, too.
Typical underhanded trick by the soft skinned sons of democracy.
I cannot tell if they are LARP safe tacs?
and damn you all, I am seriously considering getting one of these. Never be able to get it to an event at all, just pootle around the village, but if I was ever to get a bike I would want one like this.
Never mind tacs; I have this image in my mind of us gaily pedalling along, singing a song, only to all be mown down by a hidden machine gun. I have difficulty enough just "dying" on foot without injuring myself.

Yes exactly the sort of dishonourable thing those allies would do, the French especially.
Well, I am sure there is a drill for it. Stop, dismount, carefully place expensive bicycle on its side, go 'ahhrrr' and die?
Cheers

" took about an hour and all went together well. "
Hmm, you must be more handy than me. I just spent an entertaining afternoon trying to put this thing together, it does at least finally look something like a bike.
Unfortunately it seems to be missing the guide clips for the front brakes, and they don't work without them. I would imagine they can still be sourced from somewhere but I've contacted the seller to see if he has any.
I don't think it is going to be roadworthy by Foy, maybe in time for Operation Copenhagen!
Cheers

He's good with his hands, Martin!
Neil, any chance you could get a close-up pic of the front brake arrangement, please? I can't quite figure it out.
Also, can't get the verdammt pedals on yet, either - but a bike nut at work said he'd help with that, so fingers crossed, I'll be bringing it to Foy.

The front brakes were the trickiest part to get fitted and working well. after test riding I did take them off again and re-adjust the position. Also put a bit of extra bend in the brackets to make them run smoother.
Basically it works exactly the same as the rear brake so a look at that should show how it goes together. here is a pic to clarify
“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

They will be dedicated 'left' and 'right' pair.
Hopefully they may even have "L" and "R" stamped on them near/on-the-end-of the threaded parts of the pedals.
The left pedal will have a left-hand thread (turn the nut on the pedal's threaded spigot anti-clockwise to tighten onto the left crank) and the right pedal will have a right-hand thread (turn the nut on the pedal's threaded spigot clockwise to tighten onto the right crank).

Yes, the pedals were easy. I'm used to re-assembling bikes from 'travel mode', on my one they had just been screwed onto the crank arms facing inwards rather than outwards so they were easy to unscrew and just put on the outside.
I had another hour or so with it today and it is all fine, I even greased all the bolts. Just have to wait for the front brake guide clips to turn up, the seller said he'd send some and I found some originals on eBay if they don't turn up for some reason.
I spent quite some adjusting the rear brake guide clips to get them just right, then realised that the back wheel isn't straight inside the mudguard. Well I'm buggered if I'm taking the whole thing to bits again just to correct that, the wheel spins freely and that will have to do. Thank goodness for such innovations as quick release wheels and cables instead of rods on modern bikes!
It does look very smart though I must say.

VERDAMMT!!! Sodding brakes!! I can see what needs to be done, but I can't get them even, for some reason. One side is just right, the other is too close and rubbing the wheel, but no matter what I do, I can't make it right.

What you do on one side affects the other, try loosening the bolt on the stirrup bit, then adjust each side by a small amount in turn until they are right, then do the bolt on the stirrup thing up again.

Thanks for the advice, Martin. Will try that tomorrow.

This is my method of adjusting brakes on bikes:
Loosen the bolt that holds the brake on. Now either get a friend to hold the brake lever or use a cable tie, elastic bands, string or whatever to keep the brake lever pulled tightly. Now tighten the brake back up. It should now be central when you release the brake lever.
Its always easier to adjust when the brake is pulled as then when you tighten things the brake won't be moved. Not 100% sure how this will work with rod brakes but it may help.
Built myself a replica Truppenfahrrad last year using a 1950s Japanese "Mister Cycle" 28" roadster as a base. I obtained the distinctively fahrrad parts from Ebay.de with judicious use of Google Translate: Bosch headlight w large size dynamo, reproduction prestoff rear triangle toolkit, original Wehrmacht issue rear reflector and Plunger type front rod brake that was more common in Europe than the Phillips style (British/Indian/Chinese/Japanese) rod brakes. Hikishop.com has reproduction handpumps with clips as well as correct-ish brown or black saddles. TFs usually came with a front plunger rod break and a rear coaster break. I was able to obtain a NOS 1950s German made Komet coaster break which is practically unchanged from the 1930s one. The chainring is modern and made in Taiwan but looks very much era correct. I had the rear rack and wooden grips fabricated to spec.
That looks pure awesome!
Nice build

Beautiful job! What did you use for the paint? The main issue with mine is that it is too shiny.
