It would be great to play a game where we had 10 rifles for every SMG but really, how likely is this? Also, in the world of Real Steel, WW2 rifles had greater range and accuracy than SMGs so personally, I'm all for 500 fps bolties and 350 fps AEGs as I think this gives the low numbers of rifles a chances against AEGs. I understand that stealth doesn't always require 500 fps and that <350 can be more than adequate but let's just try this when your on the offensive and all your rifles are sneaking around instead of being able to provide sniper cover...

I'll be using my VSR at ALSOS at <350 because that's the rules and I haven't got the time to rebuild it as a k98 sniper before then: I want it for sniping so it's only going to come out of the bag for games when 500 fps is okay.

The only way I see mechanging is if the ACM chaps get reading these forums and do skirmishable WW2 bolties that everyone can afford to have in their gunbags. Then we can have a realistic mix of rifles to SMGs but I'd still favour a higher fps for the bolties over the 800rd / minute AEGs.

I always carry a sidearm (well it's what I usually end up playing with anyway) Most of my guns (now being mostly gas powered) are a bit too toasty for close range. As for FPS, I would happily use a bolt action rifle doing less than 350 fps so I could use it up close, I've seen Mindham using his spring K98 which is doing 320something and seems to do very well with it. Each to their own.

I would say that people who chose to use a rifle at 500 feet, whether it be the Tanaka K98, Spring K98, No.4, Mosin, Springfield, carbine etc should be responsible in doing so, it's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and pull the trigger, but an experienced player shouldn't do. If that person then got shot by an AEG from much closer range, then tough, you chose the weapon to play with, people with high powered rifles don't assualt. I know that the carbine gets chucked on the ground or over the shoulder the moment I take off towards someone. Know what weapon to use for the role you play - if you get caught at close quarters with a high powered gun (which is a situation that cant be helped sometimes), either you're already dead or draw a sidearm (or any of the below)

You've got a number of trains of thought:

Use a rifle in all instances - Make sure it's less than 350.

Use a high powered rifle MED apply:
- carry a sidearm
- Call yourself out if too close
- Retreat back to a position where you can shoot from (usually ends up getting you shot anyway)
- Use a different gun for your role.
- Use a Ferrett with a thermobaric attached to its back :lolpanda:

All good 'common sense' points from Mr Webby. At the moment, I always carry a sidearm but am think of dropiing this for WW2 airsoft (non-US Para at least) as I haven't seen many Sten gunners or riflemen usingone in period photographs. Also, unless there at lots of buildings, I seldom use it - and I looove my pistols!

My sniper set-up will be as Webby suggests - rifle plus sidearm with my bro as spotter with an AEG. For ALSOS, I'll be hefting a Sten with one mag and VSR @ <350 but this is just so I can play with both of my new toys, if Dog Green gets them delivered in time :good:

Post ALSOS, the VSR will be upped to 500fps as my Winter Gun Fettling Project (into a K98 if I can find a dBoys donor and some help on how to chop it).

If you're wearing a Denny, then the pistol could be chucked down the inside of that, you're still armed with one, but it doesnt detract from the look or authenticity. The webbing belt makes a denny into almost a giant pocket!

Resurrecting an old thread... after playing an open day with a 480-ish rifle, I found that the MED rule was a pain. I couldn't be sure of distances, and suddenly scrambling for my pistol when people popped up nearby was a hassle I could have done without. With that in mind, Boshman kindly changed my spring for a sub 350, so I could use it at the Loop game. (Yes, not an ideally suited environment, I know, but I wanted to use it!)

So how did the other riflers at the Loop find it? What weight ammo do you use? It was only near the end that I realised that my .30s were too heavy, causing my shots to drop far too early.

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier

Andy, I'm surprised you didn't swap ammo weight as soon as your rifle was down-graded.

The principles of power and bb weight isn't restricted to rifle only. You wouldn't use .3's in an AEG of similar power and expect far reaching distance.

I found it quite refreshing yesterday to be able to use a rifle in close quarters, the pistol rarely came out! hehe

Was doing 330 fps with .2s, didnt have many problems with hitting anything, even with the front iron sight breaking off lol!

I assume you adopted the "fairground air rifle" aiming procedure, i.e. ignore the obviously maladjusted sights and aim along the gun.

hehe

I aligned the tip of the outer barel that I could see with the rear iron sight, then tilted it down so I couldnt see it any more without hopfully twisting the aim.... then a little lower just incase its still a bit too high!

i used a tanaka kar98 at the loop

i chronoed with headshot, and it came out a t a low power of 281fps  i was very disapointed
thats with .20 bb and 134a

ive been told thats quite low for a tanaka

ive yet to chrono with green, i didnt even take any , to avoid ANY misunderstanding :D

in game i was also using .30 bb didgicon ammo which i thought would make it more accurate.

i shot some people at about the 10 metre mark, and had no complaints at all

i even did some longer range shots in the better lit tunnels, and was rewarded with a nice sound when people were hit, but no one went apeshit.

best one , i was in a pitch black tunnel, 30 metres back from a barricade of shite, loads of germans at the junction, id shot a few, and they had fragged the rubble a few times, out of the dark someone said, "be carefull thes one in there with a bolt action"
another said "is he still in there"
i fired in to the dark and a second later heard a nice meaty thwack,
"yes looks like he is" said a german :D

so even with a low powered tanaka, i had a brilliant game, when i next get to a game ill try it on green and see how it goes, but ive no worries at all about using it on a lower power, and i probably wont upgrade it, if it works well out to 40-50 metres

:good:

I think I heard something along those lines, must have been in an adjacent corridor/room to you Porta! I rarely heard the WACK or TWANG of my BB hitting anything, only "argh - Sanni" if I ever hit anyone.
