About time I stuck my oar in on this
I like camo - but I like it when its done to be accurate to the unit and timeframe being portrayed. Take my French campaign TK uniform. Feldgrau clothing with a Plane Tree helmet cover. I've got pics of TK troops using that exact combination in France. Then there is the "classic" Waffen SS look of camo smock and helmet cover. Looks bloody good when you have a whole group dressed in the same type of kit (though not neccesarily going as far as using the same camo patterns - the Germans werent that anally retentive about wearing the *same* camo LOL)
However, camo sure aint the be-all and end-all of it. Feldgrau done on its own looks absolutely superb when you have an entire group at an event in the same kit, and it brings me nicely onto my final point. If you're strapped for cash, then dont go for camo kit to start with. Get an M36 tunic, straight leg trousers and jackboots and you can be accurate for the entire war!

Yes spot on I think the complete standard Feldgrau looks awesome and always have it is iconic and antipathies the WW2 German soldier. ![]()

Free speech is expensive these days!

ooh, I bet they were if they could lay their hands on enough of it
. They can't have changed that much in 70 years
Totally agree with Kermit & Oddball though. Feldgrau looks the shizzle, both for Heer and WfSS, and should be the cornerstone of any budget impression.
Don't get me started on camo parachute scarves on Airborne.
The long and short of it is that they did take cuts of chutes for souvenirs, and sometimes utilised them...including as helmet covers (there's a picture on this forum somewhere). But you really do have to question the effectiveness of wearing a tiny bit of camo as a scarf when the rest of you is decked out in a lovely khaki jumpsuit and a helmet with no foliage.....
I was told sometime ago that the US cammo scarf thing had nothing at all to do with cammo but showed others that the wearer had actually took part in a combat jump as they wouldnt be allowed to cut up their chutes during training jumps???
There was a re-enactment event earlier this year, a private battle I believe. Several German groups were involved but it was a purley HEER affair. Several SS re-enactors even bought new tunics to badge up specially for the event. The photos look amazing. Big groups of guys all wearing Feldgrau, the pics with loads of guys all wearing greatcoats looked even better. Feldgrau can be very striking in its simplicity. I will try to find a link on the Pst forum to the pics.

We certainly know where those pics were taken, it's Tuddenham, where Josh runs his Gunman games.

They certainly are some fantastic photos though, as one guy said nice and dark and moody!

have to admit they are very nice pics. there is something about the great coat which just screams right.

The second link shows pictures from a site near Ashby-de la -Zouch. Not sure if it is still used.
First time I went it got down to -5 with just zelts and a blanket. good times.

I think Das Reich still use Ashby. Went down there 3 years ago to first meet the boys. I remember driving further into the woods thinking "Christ, what have I got myself into" Reminded me of something between Deliverance and Texas chainsaw
On the subject of camo and its overuse - Has anyone ever seen the b/w picture of the Waffenmeister outside his workshop wearing a full splinter 4 pocket tunic and matching trou?
Well I've been trawling me pics on disc (see Boursin Gloop thread - what is it with the cheese fetish on here?)
and I came across this lovely scan.

So rare to see a colour photo don't you think?
Hmmm, I didn't realise they had Heras Fencing during WW2......

Yeah, it didn't fool me either!

quote from Der Erste Zug site:
...all those Fire Eaters with the special patches lost a lot of men, but they did make better looking corpses than those of us with the plain uniforms.
Undoctored snap here - Harewood House, Leeds, 2005..... BUSTED!Still - it's what many of the so called "Living Historians" still can't achieve.......
It was the fake alligator watch strap in the foreground, that initially rang alarm bells
Hehe, it was the ubiquitous IKEA chair and carefully placed eagle & sign in the background that did it for me - looked like a display not a workshop!
