1952 Ishapore SMLE MkIII* - but with the oval shaped front muzzle thingy instead of the rubbish looking square cut ones. I think I may have the wrong sling as it seems about a foot too long. I need to find a stacking swivel as well.

Anyone know what this marking on the stock is?

From China, i think. But the inner workings are true to the original as well.

You might want to be careful with that, as I believe the paint they used to make it glow in the dark was actually radioactive! Led to a lot of infertility in pilots apparently becuase it sat right between their legs. I'm not 100% sure on this by the way before you chuck on a NBC suit!

You are quite correct! The cardinals (N-E-S-W) and the 10-deg. markings on the compasses were made of a radioactive compound (radium and zinc sulfide) which is still very "hot" although the paint is no longer visible in the dark. In 50 cm (1 1/2 ft) distance, the gamma radiation measured is 0.35 µSv/h (microsieverts/hour). The natural background radiation is about 0.10 µSv/h. The threshold for dangerous radiation is 0.30.

Needless to say i won't be opening it up to clean it and I'll be keeping it stored well away from the kids!

Yes it is... I suspect it's a bren sling.

I need to find a stacking swivel as well.

Only if your desperate. I think they were deleted fairly early on.

No, but there's a book which has them all in it. I don't have it, but if you post on pozzi you may find someone who does and can identify it.

But doesn't the BREN sling have big hook clips on both end, unless they've been removed?
I know that there are at least two lengths of LE style sling, as I have one that is barely long enough to fit either a No1 or No4 - I've always been lead to believe that it's for the British Thompsons.

The big hooks are completely separate pieces and can easily be removed. What goes in between is basically an Enfield rifle sling.

At some point there was an extra long sling that was for the Bren, though often a standard rifle sling was used, and I suspect that's what Martin has there. (minus the hooks/clips)

More info that you could possibly need about rifle and bren slings:
http://www.karkeeweb.com/patterns/no_pa ... lings.html

I assume yours is one of the 58" slings, rather than 46". Since the 58" sling appears to have been brought in post-war, I'm afraid I'm not interested in it. :(
