what paint type and colour do you recommend mate ?

RAL 6006 eggshell. Spray or brush. AFAIK this was the German equivalent of Brit "service brown" - almost everything military was painted in it on leaving the factory.

did the bayonet fit on to the spade carrier? or should i just fit a bayonet and frog straight on the belt and leave out the spade and carrier?

Yes, if you have both the bayonet attaches to the spade carrier. If you're not carrying a spade it goes onto the belt. Check out that mp44.nl link I posted.

i have posted for a gas mask tin in the wanted section so see what comes back mate thanks for warning about repro ones i will try get an original

You can also try ebay.de or a military dealer like Underwood (expensive), Klaus Butschek (annoyingly now needs an account to view stock), Helmut Weitze, etc. etc. Or one of the vendors at a bigger show.

I agree, you cant go wrong with 6006.
You can get it made up in quite a few places. My local auto paint specialists do a spray can in Cellulose or acylic and you can select the degree of matt or shine.
One trick is, once you have painted it and given it plenty of time to cure, is to blacken the bottom. It really makes you look the part. Boiling some water over a hexi stove will do the job nicely, army surplus ones are only a couple of quid. Dont attempt it without something in the mess tin, you might burn through it.
You can use the same colour on you gas mask tin if it needs a touch up.

What size are you? I have a pair of unworn boots that came from Trident, size 12. My calves are too large to fit down the top. They have been kicking a out the lock up for years.

im size 9 so defo wouldn't fit, scope is just a crappy 4x20 scope that you can get off ebay for about £8 with high scope mounts at the front so it looks like a PU scope. Cheap and looks pretty good :good:

As Oneeye says any plain single pin leather belt will do for now. I'd give the ammo pouches a bit of going over with paint to disguise the twotone colouring and make them look more wartime and maybe scrim up the rifle to cove the stock join and scope a little too. An excellent start though. :good:
