I may be a dummy but I was under the impression that the Fallschirmjaeger were a Luftwaffe unit. However I see Heer and SS decals on FJ helmets for sale on militaria sites. What's up with that??

the first FJ were Heer, then were transferred to the Luftwaffe.

The Waffen SS FJ appeared later in the war

OK so all Heer FJ became Luftwaffe after a certain date?

No

Its more confusing.

The Army and the Airforce both ran parachute units initially but they were quickly all amalgamted to luftwaffe. Its why you seen some alter hanser with army para qualification badges which are different to the lufty ones.

SSFJ battalion 500/600 was formed late war and was an SS unit (allegedly made of former officer and NCOs disciplined for minor infractions but im not sure i believe that) and was an SS unit that simply wore lufty jump kit cos the completley knackered third reich had more presing issues at the time then designing new kit for a new unit.

There are some fanciful dot44 jump smocks and helmet covers bandied about but zero photographic evidence they existed let alone were worn.

Here's a pic of some FJ - note the army chest eagle some of them still have.

Ths SS never put runes on the side of their jump helmets....sometimes they took the chest eagle off the front of the jump smock...

By late war a belt was a belt and a jacket a jacket, you occasionally see the 'wrong' branch of service kit in a formation.

No ones going to turn down a consignment of winter parkas or similar cos its the wrong pattern.

Its rare but it does happen.

Same as FJ in reg inf lids and LFD smocks.
