I know there isn't a guide up as yet per se, but does anyone have a reference photo I can use to base my Heer impression around? Also, is there a particular unit we're doing, so I can get the necessary badges and stuff?

Also, as a 25 year old (well, on Feb 10th) volunteer to the wehrmacht, what rank and experience would be expected of me, and what decorations?

Any help gratefully received. :D

As yet, no specific unit. I was going to pursue the group more vigorously, but at the moment, Fallschirmjager is the flavour of the month (me included!), so Landser will be one for the future. Basic kit:

Feldgrau tunic and trousers, badged up as Heer.
Helmet, or M43 cap or M35 sidecap.
Belt, Heer buckle & Y-straps
Jackboots or short boots and gaiters
Breadbag
Waterbottle
Mess tin
Gas mask canister
Zeltbahn (Splinter pattern)
Entrenching tool (if you're man enough to carry one!)

Camo gear was few and far between. Splinter pattern only - even Tan & Water is pushing it really. Camo smocks / tunics were rare. Most wore the Zelt as a camo coverall if required. As the war progressed, so helmets were camoflaged more. The decals were scratched off and helmets were painted various colours, depending on which front and which period. Camo covers (splinter) were used, also breadbag straps, rubber inner tubes and chicken wire were used to secure foliage, etc.

Thanks all. To be honest, I'm glad the boche weren't hot on unit insignia etc., sick of sewing stuff on!

STill wondering what a reasonable[i/] level of decoration would be, although I don't think I'll count my fire-dancing escapades as counting toward a wound badge.

Black wound badge perhaps for that one!

I would suggest Infantry Assault Badge as a starter. This indicated that the wearer had been involved in three or more actions against the enemy, so was fairly common. For quality goods and service, I'd recommend http://www.regaliaspecialist.com

On the subject of kit. Can anyone help me with the Heer insignia? I got an Eagle and some collar things but they are embroidered to a larger piece of material. How close should they be cut to the design (I've see Eagles cut in a rough triangle and trimmed around the design so which way is correct) and where about on the tunic should they be sewed (rough dimensions from a reference point please).

Lastly, I got a bit of ribbon, Iron Cross I think, but I won't add it until I'v played a few games and earned it. How big/ loose is the loop meant to be and is it the second front button hole from the top?

for info on cutting and sewing bevo breast eagles and collar tabs
see here:

P.S using some fabric glue to fold and stick them first is also a great help!

Ah, sarcastic post - yes, apologies for the model, still it's the kit you are supposed to be looking at.

(LOL - seriously, thanks to Andy for putting kit together when he should have been packing to go home - and for writing the text)

How does one get a copy of the picture? Normal clickery doesn't work...

Anybody fancy making a "Signal" front cover for me? :D
