I'll be coming in basic battledress and hopefully as a stranded MP who's ditched all his identifying kit (redcap etc).

This is what my grandfather was in the BEF. He got left behind and was captured by the Germans. He then escaped and made his way, with the resistance, over the Pyrenees into Spain where he was interned at San Sebastien. He then escaped from there and eventually turned up at Gibraltar, at which point he was sent back to Blighty and discharge for the duration! He was missing for 18 months.

Crickey. That's "A Year in the Merde" with a difference. You should post the full story.

That's all we know! My mum was born in 1945 and he never talked about it beyond giving the facts, he died in 81, aged 81! He was born on exactly the same day as the Queen Mother.

He became an MP because he was a worker for the AA.

The only paperwork we've ever found are his dismissal papers and his service record that posts him as missing then suddenly reappearing in Gibraltar 18 months later!

Feck me!! So he wasn't even a youngster when he was doing all his derring-do. Would there be anything in his service records about all this stuff? I'd imagine the Army would do a pretty thorough debrief after something like that.

That's a shame. Have you tried contacting the curator of his unit's regimental museum? They are often trained historical researchers (no offence to your mum and aunt :D ) and will have a whole load of stuff on hand. It's also a story that should spark their interest.

That's the thing. We don't even know what regiment he was in as it's not written on any of the documents we do have! :slap:

Do you know his army number? You can work out the regiment from that I believe (at least the regiment he enlisted into).

hurrah! I should get my uniform made in time. By hero Collections, who have a good reputation among 1939 re-enactors (both of them  ).

Decided, what the hell. A cavalryman has nice trousers. :D

Hero Collections, who have a good reputation

They do, they are the famous 'Polish' makers of RAU/German uniform fame. They also have a reputation for putting small orders to the back of the line should a film job come in. Thats one reason few dealers will use them anymore.

aka Stigroadie

better by design

Yeah, I know. That's why I asked the guy who knows the guy (OK, there is no way to make that not sound dodgy  ) who works at Hero to get us a firm date on one.

I am prepared to have my parade, how shall one say, rained on. But I'm holding out still for the friend who knows a friend who... to prove its worth.

Guy

More like this

I have no idea about RAF, but is that not walking-out kit? Surely you'd want BDs, like the above.

i think the early war uniform was service dress, BD came later due to the lack of material . but i could be wrong.
