We've just received our Pilotka's from Rusmilitary and we also have red stars, courtesy of Diggah, to pin to the front.
Therein lies the problem. Firstly, which way is front or are they as completely interchangeable as they appear? Secondly, do we literally cut a slot in the cotton for the badge?
Firstly, I'd repaint it OD... 
Is it the type with the 'paper fastener' prongs. If so, just put a hole in the front of the cap.

Painted red or khaki stars are no big deal. Both were worn. Pilotka's were sometimes worn with the star facing backwards to prevent it from catching the light and the men coming up behind to recognise them as friendly

I'll be swapping to a helmet for combat situations anyway seeing as I'm a founder member of the "More Helmets in Airsoft" pressure group, but Anne will probably wear hers backwards as suggested.
I've also seen pictures of pilotkas being worn under the helmet, like GIs wore their HBT caps or Jeep caps under their pots.

Often done when its cold.
Steel helmets are massive 'heat sinks' and you lose a lot of body temp off your head though the convection.

Yeah my pilotka came with a painted star and I swapped it over cos it looks better IMHO.
No longer involved in airsoft.
You also find the star backed with the arm of service colour. A star shaped bit of cloth was sewn to the front of the cap and gave a 'halo' of the colour around the badge.

what a Budionovka?
Same idea as the budionovka but much smaller, only just bigger than the star. It is detailed in 'Stalins War. Soviet Uniforms and Militaria 1941-45.' The Crowood Press 2006. page 37.
Honestly not sure how common or widespread it's use was but they have photos of various pilotka.

Talking about that book....did you notice that that comparison shot between two pilotkas the pictures are exactly the same 
There is a picture of a group of men wearing their pilotka's 'backwards' in that book as well.
