Now that I've spent a bloody fortune on US airborne kit I'm slowly starting to put together an oxf & bucks light infantry loadout. my problem is that although I love my thompson, I really want to go ahead and get myself a proper british gun. which one do I get?
My mate Tim has already built a prototype sten but I won't be able to get my mitts on one for a while yet so I thought I'd ask some of you very helpful chaps what you think of warrens No4 enfields and bren guns.
I was lucky enough to be shot by a No4 at ambush adventures a couple of years ago and I was bloody impressed!
what are the brens like, I am a little put-off because they have a version 7 gearbox which aint the strongest design out there, has anyone had any issues with them? If I'm going to spend close to £700 on a bren I need to know that It's money well spent! Are the internals easy to access?
any help or advice will be gratefully recieved.

Hi mate,i wish i can help you on that, warrens guns are top notch, never had a repair one of his, give him a call and internals are not a problem to fix,its what you fit in them that makes them reliable of unreliable,i would buy one of his guns anyday. ![]()

I would go for a no.4 dude, theyre nice and accurate (basically an APS2 in drag) hehe

PM barrie and anne as they have a bren from warren

I love my sten... Its the modded version with the battery in the stock.
I also love my No4.. but note I have upgraded all the internals in order to be reliable at 450fps+... The standard APS2 cylinder and the standard APS2 plastic spring guide really aren't up to the job. You want a Teflon cylinder and steel spring guide at a minimum when you get up to around that power.
So basically both good guns... it just depends what you want as they are totally different to use!
I am seriously tempted by the bren gun, I guess I should get one because my grandmothers second husband had to lug one around burma when he was in the worcestershire regt.

Since I don't own one, about all I can say to that is that the two people I know who have them don't use them that much...
Personally I'd go for one of the other two first as they're more practical.
In the end though... its personal choice that matters...
PM'd back.
If/when I sort the feed out on my home-made hicap and/or the two intermittent midcaps I'll use the bren more (or, more accurately, I'll convince someone else to carry it around and shoot it and I'll be the number 2).
The Sten is probably the best for pure airsoft skirmishing purposes. Our one is the silenced version with a longer barrel and shoots as well as any AEG.
Having said that, if I had to choose between the three I'd go for the No.4, but that's just personal preference.
Personally I'd say go to a game and ask the people who've posted here if they mind bringing em along so you can have a hold. Barries sten was mine and I sold it to him because I just didnt like it. the gun was built well just wasnt my style. where as that no4 is a work of art but then rifles arent to everyones playstyle. and as barrie mentions the brens a heavy beast

I do like the look of warren's stens but the internal hi-cap mag just does'nt do it for me I'm afraid. I like to change mags when they are empty and having 400 rounds in the sten isn't mil-sim enough for my style of play. now if I could get one with the stock battery and modify the magwell and hop unit to use mp40 locaps that would be great. I am a little put off by the bren gun's resin parts, from experience I have found that resin can be brittle and have reservations about it standing up to the abuse that skirmishing could throw at it.
don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pop at warren's fine work, it's just that if I spend a fair amount of money on an airsoft gun I want something that will put up with a little abuse from time to time and is realistic in it's operation.

In that case you're going to like the No4 best... no resin in it and a straight forward 30 rnd mag.
BTW, don't even bother getting the sten and then thinking about modding it in the way you describe... you're almost certainly better off starting from scratch... else warren would already have done it. He suggested he would try well over 18 months ago... I assume he thinks its not possible...

What capacity are the default Bren mags, then?

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
every things possible yith old chat ![]()
i was never happy with the internal mag in the mk5 and WILL be sorting out the mag feed as i have found a grate gear box for the job, but when i,m so buissy i can even get time to finish of the humber,,, well you can understand,
i hope ![]()
and again thanks for all the grate comments about the S&S "range" ![]()

heh... to be honest warren, what I'm really after now is a MkII ![]()
well thats handy then
i,l be able to do the mk5 and mk2, and possible a convertion from the hi-cap mk5 into the new mag fed type,,,
the reson i use the HDR castings on the bren is because to keep the end cost down, may look at doing "hi-spec" but its going to add about 250-350 on top
to cover the bronze casting cost and finishing etc,
and besides, the resin cast,s are very strong, i havand heard back about a cracked one yet ![]()

I was just thinking about a lot of the resin that I use for model making, most of it is a proper bitch for taking knocks- usually shatters like a china cup!
I am coming round to the idea of the No4 though, I can always use it for my taliban/generic afghan terrorist loadout!
all I got to do now is sell a couple of surplus AK74's and an M16a2 and I'll have some cash to spend on a proper shooter!

My bren has certainly been thrown around a bit and the resin part is fine. We'll bring the No.4 to D-Day too so you can have a look at both before deciding.
Steiner the midcaps take 150 each - they're just AK midcaps inside the bren mag shell.
well i insert a hell of a lot of glass into the mold then pore the reisn in,
we tested an old gpmg top cover out, two blocks of wood and me jumping on top, and gest what no brake,,,
its very very strong,
i may allso start to use cevlar to make them even stronger,

Hurrah - my home-made hicap now works and feeds flawlessly.
Capacity is around 500-600 so I'll need about 4 of them to get near the support weapon ammo limit. Seeing as the chances of staying alive long enough to shoot 2000 are rather limited, I think I'll be fine with one or two.
