I just recieved my Tanaka Kar98k and I have to say first of all that it's a great rifle. I just had a few questions about it.

1) I noticed that a lot of the Tanaka 98s have very light colored wood, however I have recieved one that has a fairly dark color wood which looks great, but I'm just curious if there is any difference between the two and/or why it is a darker color wood.

2)Since the manual is in Japanese I'm having a hard time finding the hop up but I'm assuming that it is that flathead screw near the magazine well under the gun that reads "up" with an arrow?

3)I also had a question regarding this gun and firing is cold weather. I live in the US, New England to be exact, and it's currently in the middle of winter and it's snowing. I'm using green gas/air duster. I'm wondering does the cold have any adverse effects on this? I have noticed a few inconsistencies in accuracy when test firing and was wondering if the cold can be attributed to this, or if it's a completely seperate issue.

Thanks.

If you have dark wood that's nice! I had to refinish mine.

Yes, that's the hop adjuster - be very careful not to over-adjust it. It's a stupid device IMHO. I over adjusted mine and jammed a bb. Rodded the thing out only to rip the hop rubber out with it (yes, it's possible!). I haven't had much luck with consistency with my K98, so much so I stopped using it. I'll be changing the hop system soon so hopefully it will be resolved.

falfal,
Welcome to our forum, we hope you will enjoy it.
Yes the hop is the screw which you described. It is very fine and fiddly to get right but once adjusted should be fine. A turn of the screw by just a couple of thou. makes a huge difference to the bb hop, so just go very easy with it.
Regarding the cold weather, yes it does have a very adverse effect on performance and consistency. Below about 15 degrees C all gas guns are poor performers. We are used to this in the U.K. as most of our summers rarely get above 24 deg. It is something you have to accept. It is going to be difficult to adjust the hop precisely in the cold weather so don`t bust a gut with it until it warms up.
Tanaka kar.98 is an excellent choice.

Thanks for the help guys! I guess I'll just wait for a warm day until I mess around with it and start drawing conclusions. It really is a very nice rifle.

Good to see they've moved away from the yellow stock wood. I spent a whole day sanding and staining to get mine to look like that.

Seem like they have. Mine is that colour, I believed it was because it was the export version, as the others I hve seen are the light tan/sand colour. Next question is where, oh where did you get the sight. I have looked all over for them and to no avail.

The sight is the Tanak ZF-41 scope. A guy sold one to me used for $20 USD. I know redwolf sells them but is out of stock at the moment. I also know http://www.airsoftextreme.com , a US retailer sells them for $75 each. There also this Hong Kong based retailer which sells them for $58.50 however I have not had any experience in dealing with them: http://www.airsoftshop.com/product_info ... ts_id=1307

To be honest the scope itself isn't very good at all, it just looks cool in my opinion. It isn't a replica of a real ZF41 scope, even though it has the markings. It is also pretty low power. However, it comes with a mount that easily slides onto the side of the rifle which may alone be worth the price:

True the scope is not great, but the mount is what I'm really after. Airsoftshop never got back to me. Cheers for the link to airsoftextreme.

I have tanaka scope & mount for both of my tanaka rifles.

Once I get round to some taking some pics, I'll prolly offload - since they look good, but I prefer open sights, when using a rifle.

falfal u got a great price on buying your scope :good:

89 euro is still a good price, my first scope was bought from Holland - cost more and I found out after sending the £££ that the seller was really dodgy. I "learned" Dutch very quickly lol via some re-enactment forums out there.

I was surprised that it was delivered in 2 days.

I think it just varies batch by batch. Mine is a few years old but came in a darker colour similar to that. Didn't stop me stripping it down an doing it agian though.

Jay I used Colron dark oak stain on mine followed by boiled linseed oil to seal it. I'd advise to use the stain sparing though as it is very dark and the oil can darken it further. I redid mine as the first attempt came out just too dark. One good coat of stain and a couple of oil should be enough. I let the first oil coat air dry so it soaked in and then 'baked on' the second by the fire to ensure there was no residue left. :good:
