Ah, the old 'what do I do with my Tanaka mags' problem. This has come up in the past and a couple of times people have looked into making something but nothing resulted. A shame because I recon if someone did a run of 50 K98 pouch sets that look right but are made to fit the mag will sell out worldwide inside three months.

Brit 49 pattern battledress.

As soft as a baby's collection of sandpaper.

Perfect for when "really itchy" just isn't itchy enough.

Can anyone recommend a good pictorial reference book for US Infantry? No particular units or operational theatre just good clear original pics?

Is there such a thing?

Hmm, just had a look around and everything I have is spread across many books I'm afraid. Though if anyone else has something I too would like to know.

"G.I. Collector's Guide" is ideal for pics of all the bits and bobs, but not on a soldier.

George Forty's "Us Army Handbook 1939-1945" has quite a few nice original pics in it. But isn't massive.

Yes, Nick the Medic has those for sale, try Das medic on Pst!! if you really want them.

So finally at 18.00hrs the red van arrived and my box was delivered. I now own a Tanaka Kar98. Total cost with shipping and customs charges £395.
The colour of the wood is a bit off but that can be sorted. Now where is my tin of 134a?

See how many were actually in a lighter wood? (not really relevant on this post but possibly more likely to be see by Poacher). I've had a few people say the lighter wood was actually on originals (to what extent I don't know though).

Congrats on the K98k - now go spend some more money by talking to Heidi about a BGS hop unit

As for light/dark and mid colour wood - I've seen examples of all. Only reason I stripped, stained and oiled my Tanaka woodwork was it's now a little easier to hide in the field with it.

If I had the money now I would have bought back the G33/40 from Dave Barrett and leave it in it's Tanaka 'light' stain.

Hope the new owner enjoys it.

Obviously it's hard to tell, pretty certain is that the greater number of K98 came with a laminated stock. I've stripped back to raw a couple of these and they are never as pale as the tanaka, the way they are made pretty much prevents a pale colour.
It is ultimately a personal thing, I'm used to the darker colours and thats what I like.

Works every-time for new battledress. The job's not complete until the cuff lining turns a good browney gray

I was thinking more of washing it with a heavy dose of Lenor and then using spray-in hair conditioner - like the real WWII soldiers did.
