I know various bits have been posted here and there but what exactly would be required for the full kit challenge for an Heer Infantryman?
I have been buying bits and bobs and was kindly given an A frame by Pimms today. So I find myself with Y straps and belt. A frame. Mess tins and zeltbahn. Mag pouches, breadbag and water bottle and finally a repro bayonet and frog. Funnily enough I've found the addition of the A frame, makes the whole rig sit better and therefore more comfortable. As far as I can tell an entrenching tool is my only missing item. I have a post war GDR folding shovel, and I know leather folding shovel covers are available but do they work with the bayonet frog like the straight shovels do or am I better off getting a straight shovel. Final question, is there anything else I'm missing?
Many thanks for any help you can give.
Jimbo :good:

Gas mask tin  I think that the folding shovel cover has a leather loop at the side for the bayonet and frog to slide into.

I assume the A-frame included the small pack as well? Don't forget to strap your greatcoat or a blanket around the top of the A-frame if you're going the whole hog. :good:

No small pack!! ok that's one to look for. I've got a near enough wooly blanket, hope to get a proper greatcoat for my birthday in September.
Now I just have to wait for it to cool down enough to wear that lot! Thanks for the advice lads.

It's true the A-frame really does pull the whole Y strap thing together , so much so in my case I ditched the belt hooks .

Would troops be issued and wear the K98 bayonet if they didn't use the K98?

AS far as I'm aware everyone was issued with and carried a bayonet. Even MG gunners.

It was the Landsers side arm, their badge to set them aside. They were worn walking out and on parades when nothing else was. It's often not seen on NCOs with automatic weapons but they are such a useful tool a majority carried them.

Ok I'll admit defeat and ask for help. I've got the BL Davis German army uniforms etc book and found many ways of wearing all the kit, but what I'm struggling with is, how does what attach to what? I cant seem to get any of the Aframe straps to line up with anything. Can anybody link me to a decent how to guide?
Many thanks Jimbo

Jimbo, I've got a good link at home, which I'll post up later. First point is that you can't put it on yourself - Frau Zero Bravo will have to assist!

Put your belt and Y-straps on, load up your A-frame with mess tins at the top, using the horizontal strap to secure it. Fill the small pack with whatever you want to bulk it up a bit - socks, gloves, etc - and then attach your rolled up Zeltbahn via the two vertical straps at the bottom.

Get Frau ZB to attach the A-frame hooks to the rings near the top of your Y-straps. The bottom hooks on the A-frame attach to the spare straps on the front of your Y-straps - pull the straps back around the side of your waist, and they will link up.

That's very helpful Andy thanks fella :good:

Edit: I see now how vital that A frame pouch is now, oh well another few pennies flitter their way to the cause! I've got a load of out of date russian bandage packs, which are great for padding things out, lightweight, military looking and bulky in good regular sizes. So i'm likely to use a few of them.
The folding shovel that I've got is an east german post war jobbie and the more I look at it, it just wont be right. It doesnt have the "pick" attachment. Am I right in thinking the ww2 folding shovels have a pick attachment on them? I've seen a few on ebay that state they are the same as ww2 shovels but I'd rather listen to advice from here first.

I beg to differ, I put the A frame in place and used pliers to close up the couplings, I've done this on all things like back of y strap onto belt, and tops of mag pouches and I can pick the whole rig up without a multitude of bits hitting the floor and waking downstairs' new baby

Straight E tool and cover arrived this morning (thanks DG1) and I've ordered the small pack for the A frame so should be nearly there by next week. Although quite heafty when everything is on the rig it all seems to balance out quite well.

Please dont get me wrong, I wont be wearing the full loadout for every game I play, it's just to be able to say yes I've got the rig. I'll be in belt order most of the time. Then there's the rest of the details, esbit burner etc, those bit's I'll get a bit at a time.
