Think I've found the perfect solution for temporary tan camouflage, I grabbed a few tubes of "Gouache" paint from Hobbycraft, this stuff sets on nice and flat and comes off with just a quick wipe with a damp cloth:
If anyone is interested the colour I'm using is Windsor & "Newton Raw Umber", closest thing I could find to Dunkelgelb, they sell it in `4ml tubes, but a little seems to go very far.

Nice idea Booted. I was going to do a similar 'temporary' paint job on my lids using pva and sand. plus paint. I can then chip it off afterwards.

Sounds good have you got a photo of the competed helmet, let's hope it doesn't come off in the rain

I was going to go with a couple of layers of mud!
Thanks for the tip re the goache paint though, I'll go and have a look around the local art shop.
The rest of the kit is coming along OK, I've even put some thread through the bottom of my KD trousers so I can draw them in, DAK style.
My attempts to fade my DAK jacket by leaving it hanging in the front window for days and weeks on end have so far been a dismal failure though. I'll keep plugging away as it still two months to go.
Cheers

Plain glass actually offers a lot of UV protection, especially if it's double glazed, this is why you don't get sunburn while sat in your car. To sunbleach it properly you'd have to leave it outside, I might try dumping it in a bucket of water with a small amount of bleach to fade it. Need to test it on something less valuable first though.
And Chef, I'll get a picture of the fully painted helmet closer to the time, may need it green for Rome

Good tips all.
Not much sun in Yorkshire at the moment, eh? I've found hanging uniforms outside on the line for a few weeks always does the trick. You get wind, rain and sun (down here) repeatedly. Also, screwing it up into a ball afterwards helps.
Even a light coat of spray paint comes off quite easily with some elbow grease, I've found.
You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
Oh, and they weren't all the same colour, BTW...

That is why I'll mix in some of my KD stuff. I'll have a go at hanging the jacket outside though.
I do have a brown tie to look smart

I was planning on doing a fake coconut canteen for the game but while researching them I came across a statement on a re-enactor forum saying that these were not produced until 1943 and never used in Africa, anyone confirm this?
I'm sure I've read somewhere (though can't find where now ) that they weren't widely used in Africa but were used in Italy from '42 onwards, but here is a picture of one dated '41 from Wehrmacht-Awards, so must have been in production then ...

I found a Bulgarian reissued coconut canteen on Fleabay for about USD $11. I'll try and find the seller if anyone is after one

So presumably a standard water bottle with canvas straps would be more accurate?

Same type of canteen but I bought it off a guy in Bulgaria, doesn't seem to have them any more

There is no evidence that they were ever issued in North Africa. They were in production in time, but by the looks of it, not issued. You should have regular canteens with canvas webbing straps (rather than the usual leather). It appears that two were generally issued to the Africa Korps, by which I mean each man would carry two. A 1 litre (similar mountain troops) and a 0.75 litre (normal size).
Yep, so-called "coconut" canteens were NOT designed especially for DAK, and were equally as likely (if not more so) to be found on the eastern front. Normal canteens are correct. Doesn't matter if leather or canvas straps.

Yes. Smock can be green or splinter pattern.
In fact, I don't think a smock is essential, if you don't have one. Here's the Africa section of the same site. http://www.fjr6.net/uniform_b.html
