There is a very good reason the Germans didnt recommend building more than 16 section tents. They are a nightmare over 16 sections. The 24 section tent I made for a display the other year at Beltring was for a display. 16 wasnt enough to display the bedding of the landser and get the public in and out. They were all original zelts as were the sectional poles and every peg, the improvised centre poles were a branch for the display end and the 'visitors' end had a pole made from 4x2. I thought it best to keep the punters safe? I spent most of the week sewing buttons back on and mending tears or touring the vendors looking for cheap gash zelts for patching.
The stresses on a 4 or 8 section tent are nothing compared to those at work on a 16 or 24 section. You will build a massive sail. Pegging at the corner grommets isnt enough if there is any kind of wind. You will need to use the rope loops on the centreline. These are missing from most repros.
I certainly would not recommend going over two levels high. So for big tents you want 16, 24 or 36 sections and so on, you need to add 8 sections each time plus spares. I needed them. Not all repro zelts will button to originals or other repros. I have 2 like this.
I found it easier to build the lower level and then add the top section, there is a goodly weight of canvas involved.
Use the picture on zeltbahn.com esp. the one that shows the door way. Fold the sides back as shown. Some clot will trip over the 'threshold' and a zelt will get damaged.
If there is a chance of rain dont peg out too hard. You might need to find some slack here and there. Try buttoning the door closed last thing at night on a wet zelt tent that was pegged out as tight as possible.
And buttoning these things together is not the most humourous way to spend your time fingers are going to hurt.
Get some straw for the floor, warm and helps a little to control any mud.
Good luck and enjoy your creation. Take some photos, I didn't.

I think £50 is a fair price for an original in good condition with all its grommets and most of its buttons. Original buttons are between 50p and a quid, thats £30 in buttons alone. Dealer price is normally around the £70 mark.
Good luck with this project. The lack of guy lines is an issue, your para chord might be handy.

Hmm given Poachers sage advice, and the fact nonoe of us have tried this before perhaps a "16 skinner" would be an appropriate start. ?
We could always build two ...one for the pissheads and one for the others

surely that should be two 16 zelt tents for piss heads and a 4 zelt for the sober
but on a serious note you may be right we could always make a zelt tunnel betwixt the two ![]()
