I was recently told that if I don't wear a cuff title thats its indicative of an SS unit that was posted to a death camp, is this true ? I'm guessing that having a cuff title shows participation in active service that death camp guards would not have done.

You've been told wrong.

Concentration Camp guards were identified by their Waffenfarbe (the coloured piping on shoulderboards and soft caps). High profile elite Waffen SS units were awarded cufftitles but there were many lesser units without them that gave good accounts of themselves in battle.

Unless you really know your history a cufftitle will often act as a magnet for those who want to have a pop at you for doing WfSS, as almost every titled SS unit was involved in some atrocity or other.

Genosse,
The colour was Brown, don't ever wear brown waffenbfarbe coloured SS Black shoulder Straps.

They are Hateful things.

It is details like this you have to be sure of if you take to wearing a Uniform and being seen as an example of that nations armed forces.... research and more research, you never stop.... part of the fun you always find out stuff the more you look.

Cuff titles were never (officially) worn on smocks, so if you have one of those you can be 'generic'.

Avoid Totenkopf if you are concerned about getting tagged for nasty stuff. They were formed from concentration camp guards initially and early war all had to serve some time as guards as part of training.
But as the man says, research your unit of choice. Pretty much all were involved in 'unsavoury incidents' to some degree, but then so were an awful lot of other units and not just on the German side. An estimated 2 million German women were raped by the advancing Red Army and by women we are talking about ladies between the ages of 9 and 70 odd. Nice people to re-enact?
North Africa is about the safest theatre to re-enact if you want to avoid controversy, but knowledge is key whatever you do.

I've also never bothered with cuff titles on my SS jacket. Ties you to a specific division and I can't be arsed with that.

Maybe if it was a specific game, I might, but I don't often use the SS gear anyway. Would have for Arnhem in May, but did Hohenstaufen last time we did Arnhem at Eversley (and LFD for Driel), so it is time to give the Paras a go this time.

Cheers
