With all the StG's about and thinking about the Borysyzyn operation in DARK tunnels - I've started looking at a Vampyr for my rifle......

This (above) is the most common illustration of the Vampyr but I'm lucky enough to know a blurk who owns one.... (not working) and could try to get access to it for photos and measurements.......

Now before you all jump one me - the tradeoff for this is that the operator would haev to carry the bulky "battery box" around to remain in character - And the massive profile means it would only be of use in night games etc. So I don't know how often it would get used - I'd just like to build it to say it had been done!!!!

Anyway - Modern Gen 1 Sights are obtainable at reasonable money - I was thinking about using something like the Aries Guardian with an illuminator in the "Spotlight" -

The battery box could be mocked up out of lightweight (but robust materials and used to carry kit in.......

Whaddyathink?

Event wise - down to the organisers to decide if it could be used. Wouldn't want the soviet's complaining considering they(CiA) try and provide balanced and interesting events.

Personally, would love to see you do it, just for the "homebrew project" aspect at the very least

Have to be a Gen 1 ungated tube, just for those oh-fook-a-flashlight-has-just-shagged-the-intensifier-tube moments.

Oh, and weigh a ton once the batteries are factored into it

Am I right in thinking the Vampyre sight was the first ever night vision device, a generation 0?
If so, The cheap NVG device that comes with the new COD game would be a great starting point - it relies on active infra-red to work, just like the vampyre did, and more importantly, it's cheap ( I belive they can be had seperately for £~60; sadly I don't know their name)

I don't know if it was the first ever, the brits had the 'Tabby' night vision system that was in limited service in '44, not sure which came first, though.

Thanks for that lead on the CoD NVG kit - led on to

and this

Which could prove useful but is 15m a little close to be using a 44 on someone????

15m should fine if its running under 350fps on 0.2g bbs, out the box though they do need down tuning drasticaly :good:

I reckon if you build something genuine looking and on Gwn 1 tech have no objections to it being used in game . Its more about adding interest than gaining and real advantage unless you plan on making 20 ...in fact it could become something the Russians decide they want ot get their hands on !LOL

go for it Paul !

Oh the (embryionic) plan is to use CHEAP Gen 1 IR kit - and make a repro containing a lamp and some kind of scope.....I even thought about tring to fit a tracer unit into either a mag or a grenade launcher to make the rounds visible at night/in the dark!!!!!

And yeah - as it will be very laborious I wouldnt imagine many will surface - so the odd one would make it interesting if we ever get to the 24hr stage

Just wondering if Madbulls new M4 Hop-up unit could be made to fit the MP44 (might be some issues with the small metal bracket on the '44's Hop-up unit though) as it can be fitted with LED's for use with tracer ammo. Not as though space inside the receiver is going to be an issue....-- attachment is not available --

Tracers were discussed a while ago though and I seem to remember the consensus then was they'd be a bit farby. I suppose that's probably not really relevant though when talking about experimental stuff?

Tracer ammo was used quite extensively in WWII and especially by Germans. Rifles were used by infantry to fire tracer rounds to enable tanks to direct fire onto embedded targets. (Spotting Rounds) MGs used tracer and AP ammo. Green and Red were the most common but they also did Orange.

I think that it is more to do with the actual tracer units themselves, given how the TM ones look like a whacking great big suppressor on the end of whatever gun its fitted to - which would look awful. The Madbull ones change things a bit.

Must admit that ive been playing around with the MG42 and the guts from a Marui tracer unit. Quite like the idea of fake muzzle flash in the tunnels at the January game, and the flash hider on a '42 looks big enough to fit the essentials into.
