Beards were very rare in the red army (proper as opposed to partisans).

Moustaches were sometimes worn to conserve razors but full beards were the territory of *very* old soldiers.

The red army used to shave troops heads routinely for hygene purposes as well.

Sorry chap, I read up on it a bit years ago.

The Russian soldier had some strange beliefs.

One was that beards were really only for old men and the best one is...

"Helmets are for girls...."

Soviet officers had a devil of a time trying to get their men to wear helmets as they were considered unmanly and cowardly!

http://www.theeasternfront.co.uk/Infant ... ipment.htm
For an online reference, its actually referred to in numerous proper books though.

(weirdly the Spanish Blue Legion on the Eastern Front beleived that to dive for cover while being shelled meant you were a bit of a wuss too.... unsurprisingly they suffered massive casualties from indirect fire.)

Several good re-enactment groups also state russian soldiers are not to have beards

im going for 0.5mm or 1.0mm stubble on my head and face

no girly helmet either

i need a huge muddy puddle at the site as well to roll around in before the game starts,

and use some vodka/meths/paint thinners as mouthwash (ensuring i spit it out) for the breath effect :good:

and before anyone says it, no its not my "best night on the town outfit"

I've seen millions of pictures of Red Army infantry wearing helmets and as a founder member of the "More Helmets in Airsoft Pressure Group" or, more catchy - MHiAPG, I shall as usual be wearing mine.

Anne is going to be pulling the rug from under my feet though by wearing her pilotka, because helmets are for girls.

.....Read through all of this... I still don't get why I was mentioned in the beard conversation?.... I bleach never shave..it just grows back thicker hehe :sarcasm:

P.s I don't normally notice when matt has a shave unless i see him shaving it off... i guess i just don't notice these little things that you crazy men do :P

But it is true, in the Red Army it wasn't common place to have a beard, ask my mum!

Excellent info - I'm sure Lardassmonkey will be growing one, he's mentioned about buying soviet naval kit.

We got the chance to put some questions to a group of veterans in Moscow one time. Here's what they had to say on helmets.....

Some of the older soldiers didn't wear them but we all did.

One man painted a slogan in his helmet and was told by the officer to remove it "...because we are an army not a circus!"

Beards - No. It's against regulations in virtually every army I can think of because you don't get a good seal on your gasmask. And the RKKA took its chemical defence very seriously. I've only seen one picture of a soldier having a full beard. Anecdotal evidence says that only soldiers over 50 were allowed to grow one and this guy was definitely over 50.
